KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) systems, are responsible for the real-time tracking, monitoring, and analysis of fleet vehicles to improve efficiency, safety, and security. These systems use GPS, cellular/satellite communications, and software to provide a live of mobile assets.
Key duties and functions of an Automatic Vehicle Locator system include:
• Live Mapping: Displaying the precise, real-time location of vehicles on a digital map.
• Asset Tracking: Monitoring high-value assets, such as heavy construction equipment, trailers, and specialized vehicles.
• Trajectory Replay: Reviewing historical data to trace a vehicle’s past routes, stops, and speeds.
• Route Optimization: Analyzing and planning efficient routes to reduce fuel consumption and travel time.
• Dispatching: Identifying the nearest available unit for dispatch to improve response times (critical for emergency services and ride-hailing).
• Idling Monitoring: Tracking engine idling times to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.
• Mileage Management: Automatically logging mileage for tax, maintenance, and compliance purposes.
• Stolen Vehicle Recovery (SVR): Providing precise, real-time location data to law enforcement to recover stolen assets.
• Geofencing: Setting virtual boundaries and receiving alerts if a vehicle enters or exits a defined area.
• Driver Behavior Monitoring: Tracking speed, harsh braking, and rapid acceleration to ensure safe driving habits.
• Unauthorized Use Alerts: Sending notifications if a vehicle moves outside working hours or without the engine ignition.
• Device Maintenance: Ensuring onboard GPS units, antennas, and modems are functioning correctly.
• Reporting: Generating automated daily reports on vehicle location, driving time, parking, and maintenance needs.
• Data Integration: Feeding location data into Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) or CRM systems.
• Public Transit: Providing passengers with real-time arrival information and monitoring schedule adherence.
• Emergency Services: Utilizing CAD to dispatch the closest police, fire, or EMS units to an incident.
• Field Service: Providing proof of service (arrival/departure times) for client billing.
