Description
Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Planning Engineer to manage and control project schedules for various disciplines including civil, structural steel, mechanical, piping, and grounding. As the main liaison between the contractor and client, you will ensure precise and timely progress tracking and reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining detailed project schedules, from Level 2 schedules for bids to Level 4 baseline schedules before mobilization, using Primavera P6. This includes creating a manpower histogram categorized by discipline. Your duties also encompass building the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) that covers the complete execution sequence involving civil works, structural steel erection, mechanical installations, piping, grounding, and pre-commissioning activities.
Regular schedule updates and revisions will be required weekly, along with the preparation of three-week look-ahead plans and identification of critical-path risks with recovery strategies. You will define the activity breakdown with associated weightings, secure client approval, and calculate monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) for invoicing purposes.
Additionally, you will produce daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports featuring S-curves, manpower curves, photographic evidence, variance analysis, and recovery plans. Coordination with site supervisors, quality control, health and safety teams, and subcontractors is essential to collect accurate field progress data.
Active involvement in weekly coordination meetings and monthly progress reviews will be expected, along with preparing planning inputs and presenting updates to clients. You will monitor project constraints such as holds, non-conformance reports (NCRs), requests for information (RFIs), material deliveries, and shop drawing approvals, promptly alerting the project team to potential impacts.
Maintaining change control documentation and conducting time-impact analyses for scope changes are critical, as is supporting Extension of Time (EOT) and variation order claims when needed.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, although Civil Engineering graduates with strong mechanical and piping experience are also considered. Certification in Primavera P6 is mandatory, while additional credentials such as PMP, PMI-SP, or AACE PSP are highly desirable.
Applicants should bring 6 to 10 years of project planning experience, including at least 4 years working on industrial, petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, or power projects within Saudi Arabia. Proven expertise covering multi-disciplinary scopes—civil works, structural steel erection, mechanical piping, and grounding—is essential, especially experience with brownfield projects involving live plants.
Proficiency in Primavera P6, MS Project, and MS Excel is required, with skills in generating S-curves, manpower histograms, and dashboards. Familiarity with AutoCAD and Navisworks is advantageous. The role demands a strong analytical approach, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Arabic is a plus, particularly for client presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with client planning and reporting standards common in KSA, such as those from Aramco, SABIC, SEC, or the Royal Commission, will be highly valued. Understanding KSA-specific permitting, site access, and regulatory processes will help you navigate the project environment smoothly.
In-depth knowledge of structural steel fabrication and erection sequencing, particularly with companies like Zamil or equivalents, is beneficial. Exposure to welding procedures aligned with AWS D1.1 or ASME B31.3 standards, as well as hydrotest planning and mechanical completion workflows, is also an advantage.
