Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material Radiation Safety Officer (NORM RSO) to lead and manage the radiation protection program for industrial activities involving naturally occurring radioactive materials. This critical role ensures the safety of workers, the surrounding community, and the environment from ionizing radiation risks associated with NORM-contaminated equipment, industrial residues, minerals, and waste products.

The position involves regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and the implementation of safety protocols in accordance with international and local standards pertaining to naturally occurring radioactive substances.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Identifying and surveying the presence of NORM within sites and materials.
  • Controlling exposure to ionizing radiation to protect personnel and the public.
  • Applying the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle to minimize radiation doses.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable radiation safety regulations and licensing requirements.
  • Overseeing the proper handling, storage, and disposal of NORM waste.
  • Developing and delivering training programs to enhance safety awareness and competency among workers and contractors.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records and documentation related to radiation safety.
  • Coordinating emergency preparedness and response plans for radiation incidents.
  • Conducting audits and driving continuous improvement within the radiation protection framework.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in health physics, radiation protection, nuclear engineering, physics, chemistry, environmental science, or a closely related field.
  • Certification in NORM management from the NRRC.
  • Formal training as a Radiation Safety Officer or Radiation Protection Officer.
  • Demonstrated experience and specialized knowledge in managing NORM/TENORM hazards.
  • Strong understanding of ionizing radiation principles including dose limits, contamination control, internal exposure pathways, and radioactive waste management.
  • Proficiency in radiation detection instruments and safety monitoring equipment.
  • Familiarity with local and international radiation protection regulations and licensing procedures.

Soft Skills

  • Assertive and confident in enforcing safety standards with authority to stop unsafe work.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with operators, contractors, and non-specialists.
  • Strong technical writing skills for clear and accurate documentation.
  • Disciplined approach to recordkeeping and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under operational pressures.
  • Skilled in educating and training personnel without diluting the seriousness of radiation hazards.
